Los Angeles City Hall and surrounding buildings, August 7, 1940
The LA City Hall building is the center of government for the city of Los Angeles and houses the offices of the Mayor and the City Council. From 1928 to 1965, City Hall was the tallest building in the city, marking its architectural importance. The imposing white Spring Street Courthouse was built from 1937-1940 by the Federal Public Works Administration. The diagonally-set building across from City Hall has since been demolished and replaced with Grand Park.
City Hall has been featured in many Films and TV shows, starting with the silent crime drama While the City Sleeps in 1928, soon after its completion. A miniature version of the building was destroyed in the classic 1953 film War of the Worlds.
