Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) Studio, Culver City, August 27, 1939
At the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Overland Avenue in Culver City, the storied complex of studios on the MGM lot produced some of the most famous movies of the 20th century, producing some 50 movies per year during the 1930s. This image was taken two days after the release of The Wizard of Oz and only four months before release of Gone with the Wind, which remains the highest-grossing film in history (adjusting for inflation). A lake with boats and buildings that are part of an outside set can be seen on the right of the image. The iconic “Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios” sign with its icon lion symbol can be seen in the center of the photo.
