Ocean Park Shoreline, Venice, CA, circa 1922
Amusement piers were a favorite of beachgoers in the early 20’s. The Pickering/Lick Piers were destroyed by a disastrous fire in 1924 and replaced by Ocean Park Pier, which opened in 1925. Ocean Park Pier was replaced by Pacific Ocean Park in 1958, and was intended to compete with Disneyland. The Venice Amusement Pier, originally developed by the Kinney family in the 20’s, was a major attraction in Venice, then a seaside resort town to which residents of Santa Monica and Los Angeles flocked on weekends.
