Smoke over Manhattan, 1940
This image shows the afternoon sun casting shadows through smoke in Midtown Manhattan in the foreground. The image looks south, toward Downtown, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Hudson River in the background. The three tallest buildings in the foreground are (from right to left): the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, and the Rockefeller Building (30 Rock). At the time of this image, the Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world. In the background the three tallest towers are the 60 Wall Building (70 Pine St.), the City Bank-Farmers Trust Building (20 Exchange St.), and the Manhattan Trust Building (40 Wall St).
