Sunset over Manhattan, October 15, 1931
In this striking image of Manhattan, some of the city’s most iconic landmarks can be seen. The Brooklyn Bridge spans the East River, connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan. Beyond, the Statue of Liberty can be seen greeting ships entering New York Harbor from the Atlantic Ocean. In Lower Manhattan, from left to right, the City Bank-Farmers Trust Building (20 Exchange St.), 60 Wall Building (70 Pine St.), the Manhattan Trust Building (40 Wall St), the Singer Building (149 Broadway, demolished 1968), and the Woolworth Building (233 Broadway) stand out prominently. Governor’s Island is visible in the center left of the image and New Jersey appears to be separated from Manhattan by a river of low clouds over the Hudson River. The Goodyear Blimp hovers over the Upper East Side in the center bottom of the image.
