The Original Abbot Kinney Pier, Venice, circa 1920

The original Abbot Kinney Pier was destroyed by fire in December, 1920. It was replaced by the Venice Amusement Pier, a major attraction in Venice, then a seaside resort town to which residents of Santa Monica and Los Angeles flocked on weekends. The Ship Cafe was reoriented parallel to the shore when the pier was rebuilt.
